ART GALLERIES At Art Basel Miami Beach, more than 220 of the world’s leading art galleries for modern and contemporary art from North America, Latin America, Europe, South Africa and Asia will display 20th and 21st century artworks. The show features painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, print, photography, film, performance, video and digital art by more than 2,000 artists. Visitors can find works ranging from pieces by young artists to multi-million-dollar museum-caliber masterpieces. Miami Beach Convention Center, Halls A + D.

ART KABINETT Art Kabinett gives participating galleries an opportunity to show small curated exhibitions, shown in a separate space within the exhibitor’s booth. The exhibition concepts for “Art Kabinett” are diverse, representing everything from thematic group exhibition and single-work presentation to film programs and full-room installations. Miami Beach Convention Center, Halls A + D.

ART NOVA This section is designed for galleries representing two to three of their artists with new works, meaning that they have been created during the last two years - and are often even fresh from the studio. (Miami Beach Convention Center, Halls A + D.)

ART SUPERNOVA Last year Art Basel Miami Beach introduced the new sector Art Supernova. This platform offers 20 galleries the opportunity to present recent works by their emerging artists. The section aims to reinvent the traditional form of gallery presentation at art fairs, with a collaborative approach that links the participating galleries in a new way. The exhibitors in Art Supernova have interconnected exhibition spaces, common storage room, and shared facilities for presenting works on paper, videos, performances, artist files, books and catalogs. Miami Beach Convention Center, adjacent to Hall A.

ART POSITIONS Situated directly at the beachfront, 20 young galleries display their programs in shipping containers converted to public art spaces. Beachfront at Collins Park, between 21st and 22nd Street.

ART PROJECTS Public art projects proposed by the galleries of Art Basel Miami Beach, located at various sites within walking distance of the Miami Beach Convention Center.

THE FABULOUS FOUR:  H. GEORGE FINK, WALTER DEGARMO, RICHARD KIEHNEL AND PHINEAS PAIST Historian, author and Museum Board member Arva Moore Parks explores the works of the most influential architects in the early development of Coral Gables. Free. Friday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m.

THE NEW DEAL IN SOUTH FLORIDA  FIU Professor of Architecture John Stuart explores the regional impact of a wide variety of New Deal projects including public murals, housing, parks, and architectural and community design, some of which are located in the Gables. Free. Friday, Nov. 7, 7 p.m.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING IN CORAL GABLES UM Architecture Professor Joanna Lombard will present her fascinating research performed as a member of the University of Miami Built Environment and Health Team.  Can urban planning and design affect the health of community residents?  Yes! GREEN BEFORE GREEN:  GEORGE MERRICK AND THE ENVIRONMENT Author and historian Arva Moore Parks talks about the environmentally correct design principles of George Merrick and his methodology for “greening” the Gables. Free. Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, 7 p.m.

BUILDING CLOSE TO NATURE:  THE EARLY ARCHITECTURE OF DADE COUNTY’S PARK SYSTEM Lecture title: Building Close to Nature: The Early Architecture of Dade County’s Park System UM School of Architecture professor and author Rocco Ceo’s presentation covers the design and construction of Miami-Dade County’s early park architecture and how this architecture evolved in a context of forest fires, devastating hurricanes and the post-boom period of the 1930’s. THE VILLAGES:  FROM THE CRAFT SECTION TO OLD SPANISH VILLAGE  Historian and author Arva Moore Parks’ research has given her great insight into the City of Coral Gables history and development, and how the architectural “village” theme was at the heart of the City’s plan. Free. Friday, April 3, 2009, 7 p.m.

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN TOURS Join Coral Gables Museum Director of Operations Christine Rupp for a comfortable, informative tour of the Gables. Stops at the Merrick House, the Venetian Pool, the Coral Gables Congregational Church, travel through the themed villages and more. The history, design, landscape architecture and architecture of the City Beautiful will be discussed along the route. The tour will depart from the Coral Gables Farmers Market near City Hall. THE BILTMORE HOTEL:  AN INSIDER’S TOUR Join Ellen Uguccioni, historian, author and City of Miami’s Historic Preservation Director, on this very informative and entertaining tour of the Biltmore Hotel. Not your average tour, Ellen will take us through areas of the Biltmore rarely seen by visitors.  As co-author of “The Biltmore Hotel:  An Enduring Legacy”, Ellen is the authoritative source on the Biltmore, its architecture and fascinating history. MYRNA AND SHELDON PALLEY PAVILION FOR CONTEMPORARY GLASS AND STUDIO ARTS Now Open.

EXCAVATING EGYPT: GREAT DISCOVERIES FROM THE PETRIE MUSEUM OF EGYPTIAN ARCHAEOLOGY (Green) The exhibition features antiquities from the Petrie Museum of Egyptology, University College, London. Photographs, excavation notes, and personal journals shed further light on the science of archaeology during its infancy, as seen through the eyes of one of its greatest pioneers, Sir Flinders Petrie, known as the “father of Egyptian Archaeology.” Through Nov. 2.

ETERNAL EGYPT: PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION Eternal Egypt reveals glimpses of the Nile Valley from a bygone era, and featuring the Lost Egypt portfolios produced by The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. (FOA) charles biederman: An American Idealist The exhibition features paintings and mixed media constructions in a comprehensive look at the art of Charles Biederman, an important member of America’s constructivist movement, whose innovations trace the progress of geometric abstraction through nearly half a century. Nov. 22 through Jan.18, 2009 (Preview: Nov. 21).                            

LAS ARTES DE MEXICO (Green) Celebrating the rich and diverse artistic traditions of Mexico, the exhibition examines over 3,500 years of art and culture from the ancient world of the Mayans and Aztecs to 20th century masters. It examines over three millennium of tradition and change across the broad spectrum of Mexican life, from the ancient to the contemporary, engaging the viewer in a celebration of light and color. Jan. 31, 2009 – April 5, 2009 (Preview: Jan. 30).

THROUGH THE LENS: PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION (Green) Featuring 100 photographic works from the only publically accessible collection of its kind in South Florida, ranging from the mid-19th century contemporary photography. June 27, 2009 – Oct.11, 2009 (Preview: June 26).

Arnold Newman: A Photographic Legacy A showcase of the Lowe’s collection of prints by one of America’s greatest portrait photographers. Included in the exhibition’s fifty-nine works are compelling images of renowned artists such as Louise Nevelson, Frank Stella, Hans Hofmann, Tom Wesselmann, and George Segal, to name few.

DISAPPEARANCES, SHADOWS AND ILLUSIONS Upper Level Gallery. This exhibition will feature a series of works, many of them light-based, that deal with the ephemerality of visual experience. Included will be works from MAM’s permanent collection, together with loans and commissioned installations. Among the works on view will be Mark Handforth’s fluorescent light installation, Western Sun and Regina Silveira’s Escada Inexplicavel 2 (Inexplicable Staircase 2), 1999. June 6 – Sept. 21.

SEAN DUFFY New Work Gallery. Sean Duffy is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work displays a fascination with the phenomenon of repetition, the cyclical reoccurrence of movements in popular culture as well as in art, and such connected strategies as recycling and sampling. July 18 – Oct. 12.

SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION Plaza Level Gallery. This installation will include a selection of major works from MAM’s growing permanent collection. The collection spans international art of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on art of the western hemisphere since 1950. Aug. 8 – Nov. 2.

CHANTAL AKERMAN:  MOVING THROUGH TIME AND SPACE MAC@MAM Upper Level Gallery. Chantal Akerman: Moving is the artist’s first major traveling exhibition in the United States. The exhibition will feature multi-media video installations from her “documentary series:” D’Est (From the East), From the Other Side, Là-Bas, Sud and a new work created especially for the exhibition. Oct. 16 – Jan. 25, 2009.

YINKA SHONIBARE New Work Gallery. Yinka Shonibare, British-born of Nigerian parents, is best known for installations and photographs reflecting the legacy of 19th century colonialism. He creates mise-en-scénes of headless mannequins in Victorian attire of wax-printed African fabrics, produced in Britain and the Netherlands. Oct. 31, 2008 – Jan. 18, 2009.

OBJECTS OF VALUE:  SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION Plaza Level Gallery. Objects of Value deals with the myriad ways in which contemporary artists approach the issue of economic value. At the heart of this topic is a deceptively simple question: Does value correspond to a given object’s intrinsic qualities or is it purely socially construed – or even arbitrary? Nov. 21 – Feb. 22, 2009.

SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION MOCA at Goldman Warehouse. Featured works from the Museum of Contemporary Art’s permanent collection will be on view. Sep. 13 – Oct. 11.

DARK CONTINENTS MOCA, North Miami. The artists in Dark Continents invoke and challenge the suggested links between femininity and nature. Referencing historical moments in the work of Gauguin and related artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the exhibition questions the aesthetics of the “primitive” and “exotic” in modern art through a contemporary lens. Dark Continents includes site-specific installations, large-scale wall murals, paintings, drawings, sculpture, video and collage. Works by Ida Ekblad, Hadassah Emmerich, Naomi Fisher, Elke Krystufek, Marlene McCarty, Claudia and Julia Müller, and Paulina Olowska will be featured.  Dark Continents is curated by MOCA Assistant Curator Ruba Katrib. Sept. 26 – Nov. 9.

PABLO CANO: THE BLUE RIBBON MOCA North Miami. Featuring his marionettes created from found objects, Miami artist Pablo Cano’s new multi-media production, The Blue Ribbon, is his first to include film animation and audience participation. In this collaboration with Miami artist and filmmaker Clifton Childree and choreographer Katherine Kramer, Cano’s marionettes take the form of 10 masterpiece paintings and sculptures from art history, which come to life and interact with members of the audience. Oct. 11 – Nov. 9.

ANRI SALA MOCA, North Miami. This is the first major museum exhibition of Anri Sala’s videos and photographs in the United States, featuring works from the late 1990s to the present.  Dec. 3, 2008 – March 1, 2009.

THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ISLAND MOCA at Goldman Warehouse, Wynwood. Featuring works by Cory Arcangel, Davide Balula, Tobias, Bernstrup, Heman Chong, Peter Coffin, Matias Faldbakken, Cao Fei, Kim Fisher, Claire Fontaine, Chris Kraus, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, Nicolas Lobo, Martin Oppel, Lisi Raskin, Julika Rudelius, Mungo Thomson and others, this exhibition explores poetic and philosophical aspects of science fiction literature. Dec. 4 through March 21, 2009.

ABSTRACT CINEMA MOCA, North Miami. Abstract Cinema investigates how technological innovations from the early 1930s to the present provided artists with new means to create abstract moving images.  With the emergence of new technologies, new ways to envision the world and communicate ideas have arisen in tandem. March 20 – May 10, 2009.

LUIS GISPERT MOCA Goldman Warehouse, Wynwood. The first major solo museum exhibition of Miami-born, artist Luis Gispert, will include photography, video and sculpture and a new, site-specific, multi-media installation. Gispert derives the inspiration for his works from his experiences growing up Cuban in Miami. April 11 – June 27, 2009.

A BITTERSWEET DECADE: THE NEW DEAL IN AMERICA, 1933–43. This exhibition, which commemorates the seventy-fifth anniversary of the New Deal, considers the impact of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s programs on American culture and explores how the government’s patronage of art, design, and architecture was integral to the larger project of the New Deal, which aimed to spur recovery from the Great Depression and change American society.
